Sometime back, we revealed that JSW plans to launch a new car to compete with other car manufacturers. Yes, it’s the same one that looks like a Defender. And guess what, the brand has just revealed a launch timeline for its SUV. So, when is it launching? Let’s have a look –

Upcoming JSW Car Launch Timeline Revealed

In an interview, JSW Motors Limited’s managing director, Parth Jindal, said that JSW aims to start in the Rs 15-30 Lakh segment. However, we can also expect that the final cost might exceed due to import costs. At the same time, he also gave us a tentative deadline for its first SUV, the Jetour T2, before Diwali this year or in October-November 2026.
A key detail about the Jetour T2 is that, in the initial stages of production, most components will be imported. But over time, production will become heavily localised to keep costs low. Except for the imported battery cells and related technology from China, all parts and components of the T2 will be India-produced.

Budget Land Rover Defender?

JSW is already part of the automotive business through its partnership with MG Motors. But now, JSW will release a car under its own name. This will be completely independent of MG Motors, a Chinese-based company. In fact, JSW has turned to another Chinese Automobile manufacturer, Chery Automobiles, to launch the Jetour T2 in India. The Jetour T2 is expected to be the first car to roll off JSW’s production line, likely under a different name.
The Jetour T2 is a brawny-looking off-roader. Its resemblance to the Defender is uncanny. Given the immense popularity of the Defender amongst Indians, it’s easy to see why JSW thought the T2 was the ideal first car in India. The upright stance, boxy headlights, tail-mounted spare wheel, roof rails, and flared wheel arches give it a strong road presence. It is also 4.7m long, which means it would sit in the Fortuner segment.

Features

The global spec Jetour T2 is loaded with features, including a 360-degree parking camera, ADAS, powered and ventilated front seats, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, an electric tailgate, and a panoramic sunroof. Rumours also suggest that we could get 5-seater or 7-seater layout options.
The Indian-spec Jetour T2 will be a premium SUV, and only time will tell whether JSW launch it at the promised Rs 15-30 Lakh price range. If launched at this price, it will compete with the Safari, Thar Roxx, Scorpio-N, and XUV7XO, while also having the proportions of a Fortuner and the looks of a Defender.

Powertrain

Given its looks, you would expect the T2 to get a powerful, no-nonsense 6-cylinder diesel engine. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case, and the T2 will be offered only as a plug-in hybrid. It will use a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol mated to the plug-in hybrid technology. It is expected to get a 4WD drivetrain as well. Unlike a conventional off-roader, the T2 will use a monocoque chassis.
