i10 Discontinued?

Emission norms are getting stricter than ever, especially in Europe. Manufacturers believe that adopting alternative powertrains, such as hybrids and EVs, is more feasible in the long run. And Hyundai is one example that has taken the bait to these norms. The i10, one of Hyundai’s most successful cars historically, has officially been discontinued in Europe. The i10 is set to be replaced by the Inster EV in these markets. This marks the end of the i10’s adventure in Europe. Will it affect the Indian market as well?

India Plans?

Do not worry yet; Hyundai hasn’t taken such drastic steps with the i10 in India. The BS6 and upcoming BS7 norms are relatively lenient compared to the European ones. The discontinuation of the i10 seems a long way away for now. The i10 is currently the cheapest Hyundai you can buy, with prices starting from Rs. 6.57 Lakh and the top model costing Rs. 9.28 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
The i10 offers a decent feature list, including an 8-inch infotainment screen, wireless phone charging, cruise control, push-button start, and more. You get a 1.2-litre petrol engine as standard, with an alternative CNG powertrain. The gearbox options include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. The strong sales of the Maruti Suzuki Swift indicate that there is still demand for affordable hatchbacks, and Hyundai will keep the i10 Nios in its lineup for a long time to come.

Hyundai’s Future Plans

But this does not mean that Hyundai is slowing down with its EV approach. The Creta electric was just a start, and Hyundai has plans to unveil up to 26 new models by 2030. A good chunk of these models will be electric or hybrid. One such EV is the Inster EV. Like in Europe, Hyundai have plans to launch it in India soon. But the Inster will be sold alongside the i10, instead of replacing it directly. With the popularity of the Punch EV, Hyundai must have realised that there is a market for affordable EVs in India.
Despite the surge in SUV demand, i10 sales remain healthy, averaging 4,000-5,000 units a month. These sales would discourage Hyundai from ceasing the model’s production. The i10 has had a historic run in India and was one of the cars that helped establish Hyundai in the Indian market. If you are planning to buy one, you have plenty of time left to make a decision.
