The Tata Sierra received 70,000 bookings within the first 24 hours when the bookings commenced. This craze is courtesy of the iconic Sierra nameplate along with impeccable design language, a plethora of features and multiple powertrain options. As good as the Sierra is, Renault will be launching the new-gen Duster – one of India’s favourite mid-size SUVs. While the Duster is currently on sale in other international markets, Renault will be launching the SUV on January 26, 2026. So, as the Duster will be the Sierra’s arch-rival, which SUV should you go for? Here’s a detailed comparison!

Tata Sierra Vs Renault Duster – Design

The Tata Sierra is one of the best-looking SUVs, with many design cues inspired by the OG Sierra. The wrap-around glass design, boxy structure and high bonnet and squared wheel arches add to the rugged design. Moreover, the Sierra currently has the longest wheelbase in the segment, measuring 2730mm. The cabin is very spacious, thanks to its impressive width. However, the SUV is not as tall as you’d expect. Apart from the rugged and solid SUV-like exterior, the Sierra is also modern with a premium cabin and a suite of features.

On the other hand, the new-gen Renault Duster looks nothing like you’d remember when compared to the older model. However, the Duster is now much more muscular with wide haunches and a proper SUV stance. The large roof-rails look purposeful and add to the rugged charm. In terms of dimensions, the Duster is longer and taller than the Sierra. However, the Sierra is wider and has a longer wheelbase, which could result in better seating comfort in the Sierra over the Duster. The new Duster does feel sophisticated inside and does look to have a premium feel to it. However, the Sierra does feel well put together, and the massive glass roof adds to the roominess of the cabin, giving you the sense of being in a big SUV.

Both the SUVs have their respective upsides in terms of design. So, as design is a subjective matter, we will let you decide which looks better!

In terms of features, we believe that the Sierra has the upper hand. Tata has offered a plethora of features like triple screen setup, level 2+ ADAS, panoramic sunroof, HUD with AR, ventilated front seats, powered driver seat, reclining rear seats, a 360-degree camera and much more.

On the contrary, the international-spec Duster gets a slew of features like a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch instrument cluster, a 360-degree camera, ADAS, auto AC and much more.

So, it is safe to say that the Tata Sierra is the clear winner here, in terms of features.

Tata Sierra Vs Renault Duster – Powertrain

Renault DusterRenault Duster

On the powertrain front, the Renault or Dacia Duster in international markets gets a plethora of engine options like a strong hybrid, a mild hybrid and a petrol engine. However, for the Indian market, we expect Renault to offer the older 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine capable of producing 154bhp and 254Nm of torque. The Duster also got a 1.5-litre diesel engine in the Indian market. Renault also used to offer an AWD version of the Duster, and it will be interesting to see the engine options that will come into the upcoming Duster for India.

The Sierra gets 3 engine options: a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine (105bhp & 145Nm), a 1.5-litre diesel engine (116bhp & 280Nm) and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine (158bhp & 255Nm). All these engine options offer great performance.

So, if Renault offers the 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine with a few tweaks and some more power, the Duster might become a great option in the segment. Plus, we hope the Duster gets AWD as it did before in India.

Pricing

The Tata Sierra carries a price tag ranging from Rs 13.66 Lakh to Rs 25.81 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai). If Renault is able to price the Duster aggressively between Rs 12.50 Lakh to Rs 23 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai), the Duster could have an upper hand. That said, which of these SUVs would you choose to buy?
