New Maruti Car – WagonR Replacement?

At present, Maruti is offering the Ertiga as an entry level MPV in its portfolio. Now, the brand is preferring to launch another model that will be slotted above the Ertiga in Maruti’s lineup. And industry sources suggest it could be the Suzuki Solio (sold in Japan) inspired MPV.
The model resembles its styling with other Suzuki’s KEI cars, and Indians might see it as an elongated WagonR model. Once launched it will be placed in the sub-4m MPV space – currently occupied by Renault Triber and upcoming Nissan Gravite. However, this Maruti MPV will likely be smaller than the Nissan and Renault’s models. With a very compact design, the 3rd row seats become void for space and comfort, even the Triber’s seats are comfortable for kids and not adults. That said, there is still a doubt if Maruti will launch this as a 7-seater or keep it as a 5-seater model!

What Else Can We Expect?

The details about this model are still scarce, but obviously there’s room for expectations. One of the most exciting details about this model is said to be the rear sliding door options. Currently luxury MPVs like Toyota Vellfire, and MG M9 have this feature, while Maruti will be offering this in a very affordable price. And if this model comes with a 5-seat config only, then it can become a good chauffeur-driven car in India, at a very lucrative price.
The interiors are expected to be clean and equipped with some handful features and not loaded with multiple techy features. However, as the demand for sunroofs surged, the automaker might try to add it on this model. But we still would need to wait for a bit to know about the exact feature list.
Another exciting detail about this car is the addition of a hybrid powertrain. The model will be powered with the same 1.2-litre Z-series petrol engine that is powering the new Swift and Dzire models. Maruti is testing a new series hybrid with this engine and the same will be passed on to this new MPV too. Transmission duties are expected to be handled by a CVT gearbox option. It is too early to expect the mileage, but it can give around 22kpl.

Launch & Price

The launch of this MPV is still in the shadows, in the coming year Maruti will launch the Fronx hybrid. That said, this new MPV is expected to be launched in 2027-28, the exact timeline is yet to be revealed. Talking about the pricing, as it will be slotted just below the Ertiga, expect the model to cost a maximum price of Rs 9 lakh to Rs 9.5 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
