Most Unique Hyundai – Not What You Think!

At the Auto Expo 2025, Hyundai showcased its E3W and E4W concepts as affordable, practical mobility solutions for India. The E3W in particular is essentially a rickshaw, which has been designed by Hyundai specifically for India. To achieve this feat, Hyundai joined hands with TVS, extracting the bike maker’s expertise on Indian road conditions and affordability. In an interview with AutoCar India, SangYup Lee, Hyundai’s executive vice president and global head of design, revealed details of the making of the E3W.
He said, “We have not designed something like this before. Instead of developing the vehicle in a fancy design studio, we hit the streets, where it would be used, and spent time with rickshaw users to better understand their daily needs. This was done for two years.” Doing this allowed Hyundai to get direct feedback from actual vehicle users about how they would like it to be. So, how is the Hyundai E3W better than our existing rickshaws?

Hyundai E3W Rickshaw – What Makes It Better Than Rickshaws?

Firstly, the design is unlike anything we have seen before. Although designed by Hyundai, the E3W does not sport the official Hyundai logo. Instead, it says “Designed by Hyundai”, which leads us to believe that it will be sold under a different brand. What’s also unique is the minimalist boxy design of the vehicle. The vehicle also sports a screen that can display texts. The E3W has been deliberately designed the way it is to keep manufacturing costs to a minimum, avoiding any complex process to give it a certain shape. Design aside, the E3W is also larger than the rickshaws we see today, allowing for a roomier and comfortable journey.
The wheelbase is 280mm longer than a regular rickshaw. This vehicle also featured a sophisticated independent rear suspension, for better stability. Hyundai has also emphasised safety and taken measures for the same. On the efficiency side of things, the Korean brand has managed to fit a large battery pack under the driver’s seat, allowing for better space utilisation. The larger battery will deliver better range, and the E3W could also get a more powerful motor for even better performance.

Why Did Hyundai Build This Rickshaw?

Lee saw great potential in the Indian automotive market. Hyundai believes that India has one of the world’s fastest EV adoption rates, and vehicles like the E3W and E4W could become a part of India’s commuting facilities in the near future. The brand wants to capture a substantial share in the micro-mobility sector in India.
