Maruti Zen Modified

The folks at Race Concepts took a 2005 Maruti Zen and turned it up to 11. The Zen is one of the best options for a project car as it is a feather-weight hot hatch. This particular Zen has got a lot of modifications done to it for enhancing design, functionality and performance. So, let’s start off with the design changes.

Design

Bear in mind, this was the latest model of the Zen, after which it was discontinued. Nevertheless, Race Concepts has done quite an impressive job with this Zen. For starters, you get a unique blue shade, which slightly resembles Porsche’s “Miami Blue” colour scheme. A few black touches to elements like ORVMs, the front grille, and the boot lid add to the sporty vibe. One of the best highlights of the Monster Zen is the 15-inch compomotive rally wheels in a bronze shade, which stand out and complement the blue paint scheme. The wheel arches have been flared to accommodate the larger and wider wheels. The Zen sits lower, thanks to an upgraded coilover setup, adding to the sporty appeal.
Somehow, they have managed to keep the modifications quite subtle, making it a great sleeper build. The subtlety continues on the inside, with a clean and stock dash design. Race Concepts has restored the interior panels to look as good as new. The Monster Zen retains the stock fabric seats, a Sparco gearknob, a flat-face OMP steering wheel, custom pedals, a dashboard-mounted boost gauge and a tachometer. So, design-wise, the modified Zen is definitely one of the best sleeper builds – subtle yet gorgeous. But what’s at the heart of the matter?

Now, the highlight of this particular Zen is the performance. Out is the old 1.0-litre 60hp engine; you now get a 1.3-litre NA petrol engine from the Esteem with a massive Garrett turbo slapped onto it. This engine uses forged pistons, forged connecting rods, a tweaked cylinder head, revised intake manifolds, a larger throttle body and a large intercooler. For better performance and engine response, Race Concepts has also installed a lighter flywheel, a stage 3 race clutch plate, and shorter gear ratios.
All of these combined help the engine produce a massive 205hp. The best part is that this is in the low boost setting with 91-93 octane petrol. With premium fuel and more boost pressure, the car can easily push out 250-270hp. To accommodate the larger engine, the AC has been deleted. For better handling and stability, Race Dynamics has installed its own coilover setup ,which has adjustable ride height, rebound, camber and pre-load. And, for chassis rigidity, they have also installed a strut brace under the hood.
