The Hyundai Creta has consistently been one of the best-selling SUVs in its segment. However, the newly launched Tata Sierra is intended to disrupt the segment and put up a tough fight against the Creta and other SUVs. Starting from Rs 13.66 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai), the SUV is packed to the brim with features and tech, and we all know about Tata’s best-in-class safety. Its key rival, the Creta, carries a price tag ranging from Rs 12.77 Lakh to Rs 24.50 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai). So, does the Creta have a chance against the new Sierra?

Design

Tata Sierra DesignTata Sierra Design

One of the most impressive highlights of the Sierra is its design. Tata has surely put a lot of work into how the SUV looks on the inside and outside. The Tata SUV derives its design inspiration from one of India’s most iconic SUVs, the OG Sierra. The floating roof design, the panoramic glass roof that extends all the way to the rear of the SUV, the boxy design and much more are all inspired by the OG Sierra. It does look like a proper SUV, with a tall and wide stance that will surely turn heads.

Stepping inside, you are greeted with a very well-laid-out cabin. The dashboard is dominated by the triple-screen setup along with soft-touch materials. According to Tata, the rear seats are supposed to feel like a sofa, while the cabin gives you a homely vibe. The massive sunroof that we spoke about extends all the way to the rear of the car, bringing in a light and airy feel.

On the other hand, the Hyundai Creta has been around since January 2024. Design-wise, the Creta is a handsome-looking SUV. However, the Creta, when compared to the Sierra, has a sleeker design. It may not have a rugged and robust design. People have loved the design of the Creta because of its sleek and stylish design language. However, it may not have an imposing and eye-catching stance like the Sierra. On the inside, the Creta has a premium feel, and the dashboard layout is simplistic. With chrome metallic accents and a dual-tone theme, the Creta’s place is nice to be in. While the Creta’s cabin may not feel as flamboyant and eventful as the Sierra’s, the materials used inside certainly feel premium, and might just be better than the Sierra’s.

That said, design is a subjective matter, and we will let you decide the best one out of the two!

Powertrain

Tata has officially debuted 2 new engines with the new Sierra, a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine (158bhp & 255Nm) and a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine (104bhp & 145Nm). The turbo petrol engine is paired to a 6-speed AT only, while the NA petrol engine gets a 6-speed MT and a 7-speed DCA. Tata is also offering a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 116bhp and 250Nm of torque along with a 6-speed MT. With a 6-speed AT, the diesel engine produces 30Nm more torque.

On the contrary, the Creta also gets 3 engine options: a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine (158bhp & 253Nm), a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine (113bhp & 144Nm) and a 1.5-litre diesel engine (114bhp & 250Nm). The turbo petrol engine is only offered with a 7-speed DCT, while the NA petrol engine is offered with either a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed IVT. The diesel engine in the Creta is paired with either a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed TC.

That said, both Creta and Sierra are closely matched in terms of engine performance as well as engine options. While the Creta’s petrol engines are tried and tested, the Sierra’s petrol engines are new and yet to be tested. It is safe to say that both cars are quite similar on paper, and the real-world tests for the Sierra are yet to be done. So, we suggest you test drive both the SUVs to see which one performs better.

So, which of these SUVs would be your pick?
