New Toll Pricing –

With a view of implementing fair pricing policy, India is currently assessing for a new toll pricing system. The new policy will consider several elements like vehicle operating costs, damage factors, road condition and user’s willingness to pay for new pricing.
At present, the new policy is in the review. If everything goes well it will replace the three-decade-old rules. The last restructuring of toll policy happened back in 1995, since then we are following the age-old structure. The road transport ministry has asked NITI Aayog to review the existing policy and recommend effective user-fee models. The Aayog will likely submit the recommendations to the ministry by the end of FY2025-26.

It seems that after hearing several complaints by commuters, the government is now planning to change the toll system. We expect the new toll system to be more beneficial to the tax-payers.
Currently, India has around 855 toll plazas on the national highway network. Of those, 675 toll plazas are publicly funded, while 180 are operated by concessionaires under public-private partnership models.
