Triumph Speed 400 Mileage

The Triumph Speed 400 is a gas-guzzler with many owners claiming to get 18-20kmpl out of their bikes. I have always managed to get around 22 kmpl in the city and 27 kmpl at max on highways. But this time, my bike shocked me by giving me a mileage of 50kmpl. And no, I did not get this figure from my bike’s instrument cluster, as that is quite inaccurate. The fuel economy figure was calculated when I was going for a bike ride. Right before the ride, I topped up my fuel tank till the cut-off and reset the trip odometer on my bike to record the number of kilometres driven.

Unfortunately, after 60 km of spirited riding, my fellow rider crashed. He was absolutely safe, thanks to all the riding gear, but we had to abort the ride and take the bike back to the service centre. We loaded the other bike in the tempo, and I followed the Speed 400, maintaining a speed of 50-60 kmph in 6th gear. After dropping the bike in the service centre, I dropped my friend off at home, which was around 15 km away. My bike’s chain was rattling quite a bit, which is why I rode quite calmly without any harsh throttle inputs. I then left for home and stopped to fill up the bike to check the mileage. After 124km, the bike only needs 2.5 litres of fuel before the cut-off.

So, the Triumph Speed 400 delivered a mileage of 49.6 kmpl, which is an insane number. I couldn’t believe it myself, and I even asked several friends if I had made a mistake in the calculations, but everything was correct. Now, the shocking part is that I did not ride the bike calmly for the first 50 km and the last 30-35 km. I was riding the way I usually do, playing around with the power and torque of the bike. So, riding your bike at a constant speed in the top gear can help with mileage, giving you such shocking results.
