Skoda Superb Launch Timeline Confirmed!

During the 2010s, sedans were the real deal. And amongst the sedans, the Superb stood out prominently. Indians loved it, but inevitably, it faded into the shadows due to the increased demand for SUVs. But its fanbase remains strong as ever, and Skoda seems to have given in to public demand, as it will soon relaunch the Superb.

In an interview with NDTV, Skoda Auto India’s brand director, Ashish Gupta, teased the reintroduction of the “premium sedan legacy” in India. This can mean only one thing: the Skoda Superb is back. Moreover, he suggested a timeline for its launch around the festive season (October-November). Now that we know the Superb is back, what can we expect when it launches in India?

Skoda Superb Launch Confirmed – 40 KMPL?

The Superb was displayed at the Bharat Mobility Expo some time ago. Interestingly, the display unit was a diesel AWD one. It is very likely that we will get the Superb with a diesel engine, but the AWD drivetrain remains doubtful, as the market for an AWD sedan is pretty low.

It could be offered with the 2.0-litre diesel (150 bhp & 360 Nm) mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox as standard. However, if demand is substantial, Skoda could also offer the 2.0-litre TSI (204 bhp & 320 Nm) from the Kodiaq with the Superb.

Furthermore, the India-bound diesel engine was tested for efficiency in Europe, and the results were staggering. During this test run, the Superb’s 66-litre fuel tank was topped up. And it took 2,831 km for it to run out of gas. When you do the maths, this translates to a fuel economy of almost 40kmpl. Also, keep in mind that the test was conducted on European roads at an average speed of 80kmph in Eco mode. It will be quite difficult to reach these figures in Indian conditions. Nonetheless, the official fuel efficiency figures are decent at 20.8kmpl.

Interior & Features

The interior is why you buy a Superb. And as its name suggests, it is superb. Abundance of high-quality materials, generous rear space, practical boot and a plethora of features to make your life easier. The layout matches that of other premium Skoda cars, such as the Octavia RS.

As for the features, the global-spec model gets –

  • 13-inch infotainment screen
  • Fully-digital driver’s display
  • Rear sunblinds
  • 360-degree parking camera
  • Heads-up display,
  • Front ventilated and massaging seats
  • Level-2 ADAS
  • Wireless charging
  • 14-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Powered tailgate

The same features are expected with the Indian-spec Superb. It is important to note that the Superb sold in global markets lacks a panoramic sunroof. Skoda may add it with the Indian-spec unit to cater to the sunroof-loving Indian public.

Skoda Superb Launch Confirmed – Expected Pricing

The Superb will be a CBU unit, like the Octavia RS, which means the stock will be limited. It is difficult to judge the batch size, but we can make an educated guess on the price. We expect the Superb to cost around Rs 55 lakh to Rs 60 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). And with the new FTA deal in place, we could see a smaller price tag upon launch.
