125kmpl SUV?

The Jetour T2 is set to be the first model to leave the JSW production floor. Most details about the T2 have already been revealed, and it has even been spotted testing already. But since it is already on sale in foreign markets, we get a more thorough look at what the Indian-spec would be like. And after some research on the Jetour T2, we found this detail that would shock you.

The Jetour T2 will be offered only as a PHEV (plug-in hybrid). It will use a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a 43.24 kWh battery pack. And on the official brochure, its fuel consumption has been listed as 0.8 litres/100km. To put it into perspective, that translates to roughly 125 kmpl! Yup, you read that right, 125 kmpl. And thanks to its 70-litre fuel tank, theoretically, it could go 8750 km on a single tank. But the calculation isn’t as simple as it seems.

125 kmpl SUV – Is This Possible?

It is, in an ideal world. This number is a comprehensive fuel-efficiency figure, so it isn’t a real-world figure. As far as we understand, these figures apply only when the battery is fully charged. Once the battery runs out, the car will rely solely on the combustion engine and will receive no additional assistance from the electric motor.

This claimed figure for PHEV vehicles typically includes the EV-only range, which inflates the value. The 125 kmpl number likely includes the EV-only range. Which means that until the battery runs out, you are getting an infinite kmpl figure. But once the petrol engine kicks in, these figures no longer receive assistance from the motor, and the numbers level out.

The Jetour can go up to 160 km (WLTC claimed) in EV mode, and charging up the battery takes 4 hours. So, all in all, you would have to charge the battery immediately once it runs out to maintain the 125 kmpl figure.

So What’s The Actual Number?

It is difficult to factor in regeneration, as it depends on factors like driving style and traffic conditions. Not to mention, different hybrid technologies kick in in different conditions. Some powertrains use it for low-end torque or at higher speeds. We can’t know for sure how long the Jetour T2 can sustain such a fuel economy. Moreover, keep in mind that this is the NEDC-claimed figure, and it usually overestimates the actual driving range by up to 25-30%.

Nevertheless, the 1.5-litre petrol engine isn’t a gas guzzler either. The petrol engine has a claimed economy figure of 5.4 litres/100km, which is around 18 kmpl. So in a worst-case scenario, you could easily extract 35-40 kmpl from this hybrid powertrain. The hybrid powertrain is a win-win for all parties involved.

  • Power and ventilated front seats
  • 15.6-inch infotainment screen
  • 10.25-inch digital driver’s display

125 kmpl SUV – Expected Pricing & Launch

JSW has already suggested that it will play in the Rs 15-30 lakh segment, which makes it all the more surprising. A PHEV with so many features and a 70-litre fuel tank is unheard of at this price or even at a higher price point. While these promises may sound exciting, it becomes increasingly doubtful every passing day whether JSW can meet them.

Nonetheless, even if the Jetour T2 is launched at a higher price, it will have minimal competition. You would struggle to find another PHEV in the higher Rs 40-50 lakh pricepoint.

JSW has also announced that its first car will be launched by Diwali this year (October-November). But since making this statement, JSW has faced supply chain issues that could delay its launch. It is all speculation at the moment, but the prospects we have seen so far seem too good to be true. Can JSW bring a PHEV to the market for such a cost, or would it falter like many others? Let us know your thoughts below.
