Looks

Tata designers deserve a pay hike for the exterior. The bright colour schemes, the boxy stance and the paper-thin headlights and taillights may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it sure gets the people talking. Park the car anywhere in India, and it will draw eyes like no other. To the people who love attention and road presence, the Sierra is specifically built for you. There is nothing understated about its design.

But the issue of making such a ruckus is that you always have many eyes on you. Many people prefer an understated car to avoid such anxiety.

Tata Sierra Review – Interiors

The tested model was the top-end trim, which meant it is loaded with features like –

  • Triple-screen setup (10.25-inches, 12.3-inches & 12.3-inches)
  • Ventilated and powered driver seat
  • Level 2+ ADAS
  • 12-speaker JBL Black Sound System with Dolby Atmos
  • Dashboard-mounted Sonic Shift soundbar
  • AR Head-Up-Display
  • Powered tailgate with gesture control
  • Extendable thigh support for front seats
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • 360-degree camera
  • Rear sunshades

Tata has also done a great job with the interior, as the high-quality materials and light interiors make it a nice place to be. The cabin is as practical as a 5-seater could get. Plus, the perfectly cushioned seats and the beautiful ride quality complement each other really well. You can go on 1000km road trips without feeling a single ounce of fatigue.

However, there are still a few niggles. For instance, the gloss-black elements on the centre console attract scratches and fingerprints like a magnet. After heavy use, it could be a sore on the eyes. Furthermore, you have to choose between the 3-screen layout and the heads-up display. You can’t get it with both of these features at the same time. This seems like a pretty weird exclusion from Tata. Tata may add the feature in the coming days, as it seems like a chip shortage issue.

Powertrain

The Sierra is offered with 3 engine options –

  • 1.5-litre NA petrol (104bhp & 145Nm)
  • 1.5-litre diesel (116 bhp and 280Nm)
  • 1.5-litre turbo-petrol (158bhp & 255Nm)

The gearbox option includes –

  • 6-speed manual (available with diesel and NA petrol)
  • 7-speed DCT (available with NA petrol only)
  • 6-speed AT (available with turbo-petrol and diesel)

The model that we tested was Tata’s new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, which Tata calls the “Hyperion”. If performance is high up your priority list, this engine is the pick for you. Moreover, the engine’s refinement levels are pretty solid. The only niggle with this engine is that it is not offered with other gearbox options. Such a punchy engine, along with a manual gearbox, would be an enthusiast’s dream.

Tata Sierra Review – Fuel Efficiency

If you look at the performance figures, you might expect the fuel economy to be woeful. But you would be wrong. During the city drive, we managed to get around 12-13 kmpl, which is pretty impressive. On highway drives, we could extract 16-17 kmpl from this engine. We had previously tested Safari with the same powertrain configuration, and it also delivered good fuel-economy figures. The Hyperion engine is a peach and the one to buy.

Pricing

The Sierra has been priced between Rs 13.66 lakh and Rs 25.81 Lakh (on-road, Mumbai). This puts it in direct competition with the segment’s biggies, like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, as well as other SUVs like the Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, and the Honda Elevate.

Tata Sierra Review – Our Verdict

We feel like this is the best Tata product yet. Tata has learned from its older mistakes while making the Sierra. Yes, there may be a few niggles here and there, but that is expected from most new models. Tata will aim to work on these niggles in the near future to perfect the Sierra.

Overall, it is a great package of looks, features, practicality and performance. And when you add the fair price range and the iconic nametag, it is quite a sweet deal.
